Banks have begun offering a cheap, so-called basic bank account to clients from October 15, as mandated in a law passed in early September. Banks’ maximum charges on such accounts are set at 1.5% of the minimum wage at the end of the previous year, or Ft 1,575 at present.

The bill’s sponsors justified the extraordinary measure by claiming the measure was necessary to combat illegal online gambling. The government expects the modification to drive international on-line gambling operators out of the Hungarian market.

The vast majority of young Hungarians believe that corruption is a serious problem in Hungary and should not be tolerated, a recent survey presented by Transparency International (TI) Hungary shows. The survey, presented by TI Hungary director József Péter Martin at the Sziget Festival, found that 80% of 18-29 year olds consider corruption a serious problem.
