The Budapest city council will in the future continue to support the Budapest Festival Orchestra to the extent that its budget permits, Budapest Mayor István Tarlós said. Last month, the Municipal Assembly voted to cut funding for the orchestra by 200 million forints (EUR 940,000) to 60 million.

The Budapest general assembly voted to cut funding for the internationally celebrated Budapest Festival Orchestra from last year’s 260 million forints (EUR 840,000) to 60 million forints. Budapest Deputy Mayor Alexandra Szalay- Bobrovniczky said in the debate on the orchestra’s funding that it receives a significant amount of state support alongside the money it gets from the city.

Snowfall caused disruptions throughout Hungary on Monday. Road accidents were many and trains were delayed, though no flight cancellations were reported from Budapest’s international Liszt Ferenc airport. Runways at the airport are being continually cleared of snow and only minor departure delays are expected due to time taken to defrost aircraft, Budapest Airport spokesman Mihály Hardy said.

Magyar Telekom’s decision to cancel a sponsorship agreement with Hungarian pop singer Ákos Kovács over his comments on the role of women in society is reminiscent of the cultural policy of Communist Hungary, the ruling Fidesz party’s parliamentary group leader said. “Comrade [György] Aczél walks among us,” Lajos Kósa said, referring to the prominent culture minister of the Communist era.
