The government will propose to parliament that local councils should be obliged to provide free meals for needy children during all school holidays from Jan. 1, a state secretary of the human resources ministry announced. Károly Czibere said that the government will fully reimburse municipalities and 4.5 billion forints (EUR 14.4m) in 2016 will be made available.

Mayor István Tarlós has written to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán complaining that if the state does not help Budapest in funding the operations of public transport company BKV, then the cost to passengers will have to be raised five-fold. Tarlós raised the possibility of introducing a registration fee for children and pensioners, who travel free of charge.

The opposition Dialogue for Hungary (PM) has appealed to the human resources minister in an open letter for the ruling parties’ support to eliminate the problem of starving children.
