Béla Bartók and Polish culture will be central elements of the Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival held between Oct. 7 and 23, the head of the organising committee said. The festival, the largest of its kind in central and eastern Europe, will also feature events commemorating the 60th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet revolution, Csaba Káel said.

The CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival presents some of the greatest contemporary performers from Hungary and abroad, including Yann Tiersen, Hiromi, Plaid and the Southbank Gamelan Players, Squarepusher’s project band, Shobaleader One, Krzysztof Penderecki, Yellowjackets, the FAMILIE FLÖZ and Krisztián Gergye’s Company.

Exhibitioners have arrived to the contemporary fine arts fair, the Art Market Budapest (AMB) from four continents, and this year, for the first time, it joins the event series of the CAFe Budapest Contemporary Art Festival. From 13 to 16 October the event will host almost one hundred Hungarian and foreign galleries, institutions, and art projects.

The 135th anniversary of Béla Bartók’s birth is a time for remembering and looking back, as well as for ceaseless rediscovery. Timed for the current Bartók Memorial Year, Ludwig Museum’s international exhibition looks at the composer’s legacy through the means of contemporary art.

The Birth of Colours is a one-hour total-art performance with a 57-member mixed choir, four narrators, percussion instruments and singing bowls. The composer is the Italian Lucio Ivaldi, and the libretto was written by American poet David Brendan Hopes.

By Mary Murphy: Art confuses me. I know what I like and what I don’t like, but when it comes to what period came when and which artist belonged to what movement, my ignorance is embarrassing. I couldn’t tell a Manet from a Monet were my life to depend on it.
