State-owned HungaroControl officially opened its new air traffic control centre at Budapest’s international airport yesterday, after a Ft 13 billion investment. The company financed 85% of the costs from its own resources, and received a €6 million EU subsidy for the project.

Hungary expects “a big debate” with the European Union over its plans to transform energy distribution in the household sector into a "non-profit activity", the country’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said today (22 August). In Brussels, the European Commission declined to comment, saying it learnt of the plans from the press.

The Workgroup on reducing public utility charges including gas and electricity, water, sewage, refuse collection and chimney sweeping, held its first session yesterday. According to Mayor of Debrecen Lajos Kósa, a member of the Workgroup and Vice President of the Fidesz party, the goal is a 10 percent reduction, although the position of service providers must also be taken into consideration.

On Tuesday this week Budapest Mayor Tarlós announced that motorists will have to pay to enter Budapest by 2015. Speaking on Hungarian HírTV he justified the action by blaming the Socialists, claiming they signed an undertaking to this effect when negotiating EU subsidies for the forthcoming M4 metro line - which is due for completion in 2014 at earliest.
