The Socialist Party plans to transform its former headquarters building into a logistics and co-ordination centre for NGOs engaged in helping migrants, it was announced on Wednesday. Ágnes Kunhalmi, head of the party’s Budapest chapter, said migrants cannot stay in the Jókai utca building in Budapest’s Sixth District because the law does not allow it.

The government provides funding for everything except essentials: billions of forints squandered on billboard campaigns and a 175-kilometre border fence, while the migrant servicing system is overwhelmed. The answer has yet to be found on a European level, as well.

The ruling Fidesz party labelled the resolution as a “second Tavares report”, but welcomed support from the European People’s Party. “The second Tavares report was passed only with the liberals, the left, the greens and the communists all joining forces,” Fidesz lawmaker Gergely Gulyás said, adding that his party has a clear antiimmigration stance.

The activity is so widespread that undercover police have been ordered to keep watch on the xenophobic billboards.

The initiative called Solidarity Sabbath was launched on Friday, directly before Pentecost, in the interest of boosting Jewish-Christian dialogue.
