By Mary Murphy: One of the many joys of living in Budapest is the huge amount of activity. There’s always something going on. Places to visit. Exhibitions to see. Concerts to attend. So much so that there is a danger that life in Hungary revolves around the capital and we don’t take or make the time to venture further afield.
Budapest Zoo Is 150 Years Old

It’s been 150 years since Hungary’s very first zoo, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden in the heart of the capital opened its gates to the public on August 9, 1866, writes hvg.hu. It was back at the end of the 18th century that the first public zoos were opened in Western Europe, the zoo in Vienna, for instance, began welcoming visitors in 1780.

Programmes begin on Kossuth tér at 8.30 a.m. Saturday morning where the national flag will be hoisted while soldiers present a military salute and army offers are inaugurated. Defence Minister István Simicskó will welcome the crowd after which President János Áder will deliver a speech.

From the Island of Mohács the „devils” still come on boats, according to the legend. Those arriving by boats walk to Kóló Square to join the rest, and then all proceed through the streets, mixing in with the audience along the way.
