Christmas Traditions In Hungary

In Hungary the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve, 24 December. In addition to the usual decorations, also chocolate pieces in bright wrappings are used. In the Hungarian tradition the Christmas present is brought by baby Jesus in the evening. Religious people follow the (Jesus kid) tradition and they go to the midnight mass, too.

On the 24th of November they will do so in cooperation together with Terra Hungarica, the movement for natural wines. They prepared a great selection for guests from the 2016 Wines of Excellence, which are awarded by the National Wine Committee.

Dumplings filled with plum jam or fresh plum, which are sprinkled with cinnamon powder and icing sugar and the dumplings made of potatoes, flour, egg, and salt. We call it "szilvásgombóc" in Hungarian.

Traditionally, it is prepared with either sweetened milk or goat's milk cottage cheese, bacon or sometimes mushrooms. Here's a light dinner at any time of the year.
