The number of conferences held in Hungary climbed 10.7% to 1,197 in the first half of this year from a year earlier, state tourism agency Magyar Turizmus said in its newsletter on Wednesday. The number included 476 international and 721 domestic conferences.

Preparations have started in Budapest to build a new congress centre with a capacity of 4,000-5,000 people and the project is planned to be completed in four years, the government commissioner in charge of priority projects in Budapest said. Balázs Fürjes said that Budapest was lacking a modern congress centre that met 21st century requirements and a capacity of at least 4,000.
