On 23 October Hungary marks the 58th anniversary of 1956, and it is is a national holiday. It commemorates the Revolution of 1956, when Hungarians rose up against the Soviet ruled communist system and also the ‘Day of the Republic’, as in 1989 Hungary was declared a republic. On October 22nd and 23rd there are several programs held throughout Hungary.

Traffic changes will be made in public transport service and on roads and Danube bridges on the eve and the day of St. Stephen’s Day (Tuesday, 19 August and Wednesday, 20 August 2014). Already on 19 August 2014, traffic restrictions will be in place at several locations in the city due to preparations for the celebrations, therefore some public transport lines will run on modified routes.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a Kossuth radio interview on Friday that the economic sanctions against Russia are contrary to Hungary's national interest. He pointed out that he agreed with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico that the sanctions imposed by the West "hurt us more than they do Russia".

Flag-raising ceremonies and a changing of the guard will be staged every day outside Parliament on the newly renovated Kossuth tér, the Defence Ministry announced on Sunday. The national flag will be raised at 8.30 a.m., and lowered at 5.30 p.m. (at 6.30 p.m. during summer hours).
