The importance of the French language is beyond doubt, Foreign Ministry state secretary Levente Magyar said yesterday as he opened the French Summer University for this year. Teachers of French have come from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Poland to take part in refresher courses all this week.

Hungary ranked low among EU member states as regards learning two or more foreign languages in secondary school, a survey conducted by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, showed. In Hungary only 6.3% of secondary school students aged between 11 and 14 learned two or more foreign languages, similar to Austria where their proportion was 9.5%, the survey conducted in 2014 showed.
