One month from now, sixty years ago on 4 November 1956, a large Soviet force invaded Budapest and other regions of the country. The Hungarian resistance continued until 10 November, during which time 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet troops were killed in the conflict. Below are key insights into what happened on 4 November 1956, over the next few days, and then afterwards as 200,000 Hungarians ...
Uniquely Hungary: Restaurant Gundel's Good Old Magic, By Anne Zwack
- 3 May 2016 9:00 AM
- food & drink
When I made my first fleeting visit to Budapest in 1975, the Gundel Restaurant was a burnt out husk: the grandiose old restaurant which took its name from Károly Gundel in 1910 had been destroyed by fire. The next time was in the late eighties when the restaurant had been rebuilt and redecorated according to the criteria of the Soviet era in fifty shades of brown. Gaggles of waiters loitered in ...
Uniquely Hungary: Emigres & Repats, By Anne Zwack
- 5 Apr 2016 9:00 AM
- community & culture
So many of our expats are émigrés who have come home. My husband lived for forty five years abroad but he always rejected the epithet émigré. “If you wear galoshes,” I told him looking down at his feet on a snowy New York sidewalk, “you are an émigré.”

- 1 Mar 2016 9:00 AM
- getting around
At a time when statues are going up all over Budapest I would like to nominate a candidate for the ugliest statue in town. You should drive up above the Gellért Hotel to the corner of Minerva and Pipacs utca where the one time Swedish Legation is located.

Uniquely Hungary: Árpád Göncz, A Man With Three Hums, By Anne Zwack
- 29 Oct 2015 12:45 AM
- community & culture
I read somewhere that everyone should have three Hums: Humanity, Humour and Humility. And President Göncz had all three in spades, although his most endearing quality was his humility.
Uniquely Hungary: Budaörs's Redeeming Features, By Anne Zwack

Budaörs is not a very charismatic place. We usually drive through it with blinkers on our way to Ikea. And yet it has a very ancient history, going back to the Bronze Age 3.500 years ago. Since then it was occupied by the Celts and the Romans and, at the beginning of the 1800’s, it was repopulated by what Wikipedia quaintly calls Schwabian peasants.
Uniquely Hungary: Matyó, Where To Buy The Real Thing In Budapest, By Anne Zwack
- 23 Oct 2015 1:30 AM

You haven’t been in Hungary twenty four hours before you have discovered Matyó. Matyó is a style of embroidery which has existed in Hungary for over 200 years and it is sold all over Budapest in souvenir shops on the Castle Hill and all over the centre of the city. Matyó emanates from a little triangle of villages 140 kilometres from Budapest on the way to Miskolc, in Mezőkövesd, Tard and ...
Uniquely Hungary: Delighted To See Ludwig Go Pop In Budapest, By Anne Zwack
- 21 Oct 2015 9:04 AM
- community & culture
Until I came to this sensational exhibition at the Ludwig Museum I didn’t know I liked Pop Art. Basically I only knew Warhol’s Campbell Soup and Lichtenstein’s comic strips which are here as well, but I was unprepared for the arresting impact of this huge collection of art works whose artistic quality, it seems to me, outweighs what they call in marketing meetings here the “Vow Effect”.
