The number of smokers in Hungary has fallen dramatically thanks to government measures taken to protect non-smokers in the past few years, state secretary for health Miklós Szócska said. A recent survey shows that while 28% of the adult population used to smoke on a daily basis in 2012, that ratio dropped to 19% in 2013.

First and foremost, that as the result of the newly restricted availability and the price hikes black market sales of cigarettes have soared in the last couple of months. Fewer and fewer people are buying cigarettes at the designated stores.

Civil rights ombudsman Máté Szabó will not turn to the Constitutional Court over the question of tobacco retail licences, his office announced in a weekend statement. His office said the transformation of the tobacco retail trade into a state monopoly is a justifiable restriction on trade, as protection of minors against the health hazards of smoking is a legitimate constitutional interest.
