French Artist Bernar Venet Unveils Sculpture In Budapest

An 8 tonne steel sculpture by renowned French contemporary artist Bernar Venet was unveiled in central Budapest. Arcs in Disorder can be viewed in March 15 Square near Elizabeth Bridge. The artist told news agency MTI at the unveiling that he originally planned to display Arcs in southern France, but decided on Budapest instead, given the “prominent” spot on offer.

Hungary has a need for cooperation with the United Nation’s refugee agency (UNHCR) in this “crisis situation”, a government official told public news channel M1. István Mikola, state secretary for security policy and international cooperation, commented on the UN agency’s decision to expand its Budapest service centre for the High Commissioner for Refugees.

The UNHCR has asked Hungary not to fast-track amendments to its asylum laws. The UN refugee agency told MTI it was “deeply concerned” by the proposed amendments to Hungary’s laws on asylum submitted to parliament earlier this week. The UNHCR asked Hungarian authorities to consult with civil organisations and the refugee agency on the proposed amendments before pushing them through.

The number of homes sold in the first half was up 50% year-on-year at 68,000, real estate agency Duna House announced. As second-half figures are usually higher, the number of sales could reach 150,000 this year, the agency projected. A new home subsidy scheme in effect from July 1 is also expected to lift sales.
