Travelling Exhibition Of Hungarian Forced Labourers In Soviet Union Opens

A travelling exhibition installed in a train wagon was opened at Budapest’s Nyugati railway station. It pays tribute to Hungarians deported to Soviet forced labour camps in late 1944 and during the first half of 1945. The exhibition forms part of an anniversary programme series running until early 2017.

Rail lines leading to Nyugati station will be taken underground and the station rebuilt, Prime Minister’s Office leader János Lázár announced at his Thursday press conference. The reconfiguration will be part of the Liget2 project, which will redesign the area between the train station and the Budapest zoo.

The refurbished Nyugati tér has been inaugurated. At the ceremony Mayor István Tarlós and Zsófia Hassay, Mayor of Terézváros District have made a speech. After several decades one of the most dense and crowded squares at Nyugati railway station has been renewed, and with that Budapest became richer with yet another cultural, more liveable, and greener public space, said István Tarlós.

Democratic Coalition councillor Erzsébet Gy. Németh is suggesting that Nyugati tér be renamed in honour of former president Árpád Göncz, who died on October 6. The city council will vote on her proposal next week. Németh argues that Göncz should be honoured for his “unswerving political moral standing”. Göncz’s funeral is scheduled for November 6.

Béla Biszku, the interior minister in 1956, pleaded innocent to charges of war crimes when a new trial began on Friday. Biszku is accused of abetting the shooting of protesters by state security officials at Nyugati tér and in Salgótarján in December 1956, as well as failing to investigate a raid in 1957 and denying Communist crimes.
