According to legend, Doubtful Thomas was sent to India by the resurrected Christ to be a carpenter at the construction of the king’s palace. Thomas did obey Christ, and worked for and lived with the foreign ruler for many years. Thus, he is considered to be the Patron Saint of the Carpenters and also the patron of marriage.

It’s been 150 years since Hungary’s very first zoo, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden in the heart of the capital opened its gates to the public on August 9, 1866, writes hvg.hu. It was back at the end of the 18th century that the first public zoos were opened in Western Europe, the zoo in Vienna, for instance, began welcoming visitors in 1780.

Japan’s Tomoki Sakata won the 14th Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition at the Budapest Academy of Music. Russian pianist Sergei Beliavsky won the second prize and the audience’s award, while the third prize went to Germany’s Leon Bernsdorf. Krisztián Kocsis, the only Hungarian competitor, was given the human resources ministry’s special prize.
