New Site Launched On Danube Swabian Diaspora In Hungary

With the cooperation of German, Romanian and Hungarian museums, a new website was launched this week on the life and history of Swabian communities along the Danube. Project manager Tamás Szalay told a press conference in Pécs that the initiative aimed to strengthen cultural, historical and economic ties between the German diaspora and Hungary, Romania and Serbia.

Gábor Czene of Népszabadság conducted an interview with Tamás Fabiny, bishop of the northern district of the Hungarian Lutheran Church. Fabiny was ordained in Erlangen, Germany in 1982. He also studied in the United States. In addition to his church activities he worked for Duna TV. Since 2010 he has been the vice chairman of the Lutheran World Federation.

Public works employees have built eight adobe homes in Gilánfalva, an exclusively Roma village in Baranya county, in what Interior Ministry undersecretary Péter Szabó described as a pilot project. The houses were built by 20 workers in less than four months with the help of architecture students from the University of Pécs, at a total cost of Ft 70 million.

The national tax office (NAV) has clamped down on a retail ring involving large-scale tax fraud, involving 13 suspects. One person is already in pre-trial custody, NAV told MTI. The supermarket chain based in Pécs, southwest Hungary, distributed cleaning products, home appliances, sweets and coffee, but did not pay value added tax (VAT) on its sales.

There are currently three operating casinos in the country, two in Budapest and one in Sopron. Eleven other cities – Győr, Debrecen, Szombathely, Pécs, Szeged, Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Szentendre, Hévíz, Gyula, and Balatonfüred – are also planning on opening casinos, says business daily Világgazdaság. The only new member on the list is Gyula, as the other cities have previously operated casinos.
