I first visited Budapest in 1982. I came with some friends on the overnight train from Warsaw, where I was working at the British Embassy. Howling dogs and misty border crossings - it was like living in a John le Carré novel. Budapest was shrouded in freezing fog all weekend but I still fell in love with the city.

Public Service Broadcasting is a London-based pseudonymous musical duo who take samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda materials and mix it with their live music and samples attempting to 'teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future'. Sausage Festival In Budapest, 13 - 15 October

This annual festival featuring 250 types of spiced up meat will be held at the Hungarian Railway Museum this year. As well as lots of porky specials available along several 'Sausage Streets', there will be family programs, folklore shows, 'nostalgic music programs' and dance, plus apparently presentations of enormous sausages, during this three day special Hungarian gastro event.

Work has started to build a sports park named after football legend Lászlo Kubala in Budapest’s 13th district. Lászlo Kubala was a forward who played for clubs in Czechoslovakia and Spain. FC Barcelona’s fans elected Kubala, who died in 2000, as the club’s best player of all time.
