The Debrecen Court of Appeals on Monday upheld a Miskolc Court’s conviction of three police officers of forceful interrogation and other crimes in 2009. Two of the three police officers in Mezõkövesd, Borsod county were given suspended 16-month prison terms, while the third was fined Ft 375,000 for forgery of public documents.

A police officer witnessed the beating in police custody of Romanian József Bara at the Izsák police station last Monday, which ended in the victim’s death, the tabloid Bors reports. A staff sergeant who was at the police station reportedly appeared during the interrogation and warned the officers not to use violence.

Two police officers have been arrested in Bács county for beating to death a Romanian who had been detained for stealing an electric saw. County prosecutors spokeswoman Csilla Gyugyi confirmed that the victim had died of a beating at the hands of police. HVG reports that the incident happened at the Izsák police station.
