As of today, no direct trains will depart from Budapest bound for Western Europe, Hungarian State Railways MÁV said in an announcement this morning, according to news agency MTI. Those leaving the country must transfer at a station near the border, and passport checks that can weed out refugees are expected at those border stations.

Budapest’s Keleti railway station resumed services after 10am on Tuesday. The station was temporarily closed from 9.09am after police action to stop migrants from entering the railway station. Other passengers were allowed to board an international service bound to Vienna. When the station was closed down after 9am for an unspecified period, all passengers were asked to leave the building.

Passenger transport is set to restart on the refurbished rail track between Esztergom and Budapest on Thursday after a Ft 44.5 billion, three-year project reached completion 18 months behind schedule. Central Budapest’s Nyugati pályaudvar railway station has reopened after a two-week maintenance period in the early hours of Monday, meaning that passenger trains are again serving the station according to regular schedules. Most of the station has been opened to passengers, although there are still obstacles to pedestrian traffic on the building’s side towards the WestEnd shopping mall.

Austrian state railway company ÖBB has delivered 10 used carriages to its Hungarian counterpart MÁV, which have undergone an overhaul and are ready for use. MÁV Start CEO György Záránd said Hungary agreed to buy 55 Lange-Schlieren trains with a maximum speed of 140kph from ÖBB after the Austrian company bought trains capable of 160-180kph.
