Fidesz was again the big winner in Sunday’s local elections, with Jobbik claiming second place, as the ruling party retained control of all 19 county councils as well as Budapest and most of its districts. The left-wing parties were able to mayoralties in only a few places while Jobbik was second in almost every county. LMP candidates won a few seats on local councils.

Incumbent Budapest mayor István Tarlós is well ahead in the polls and the governing Fidesz-Christian Democrats will retain a majority in the Budapest municipal assembly after Sunday’s local elections, according to an analysis by the Nézőpont Institute. The governing parties are also expected to keep their hold on the majority of town councils, the analysis published on Tuesday said.

President János Áder will open the founding session of the new 199-member parliament today at 10am. He will propose that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán should retain his post. Orbán will also address the session. The parliamentary speaker will be elected in a secret vote and he will then take his oath. This will be followed by the election of five deputy speakers and ten notaries.
