Hungary has flood defence efforts in place along more than 200 kilometres of waterways as several rivers are flooding in western Hungary, the national technical operative unit (OMIT) reported. The highest level of flood alert is in effect on more than 13 kilometres on the Rába and Pinka rivers in the western part of the country.

The first Budapest Half Marathon was organised in 1984. During the last 29 years the race grew up into a major event in Budapest with 12 850 runners. 8500 runners on the individual 21 km distance, while others run in pairs or run the shorter distances. Budapest Half Marathon also became a real international event with almost 1600 runners from abroad, from 65 different countries in 2013.

An international social and educational trip dubbed Freedom Express, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the fall of Communism in Europe, is to arrive in Budapest on Wednesday. The project is travelling through Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany, and after stops in Gdansk and Warsaw, it will be in Budapest for two days.

The Calvinist church of Nagygéc, a tiny north-eastern Hungarian village left to its fate after a massive flood in 1970, will be reconstructed. The church will become part of a tourist attraction dedicated to the 1,000-year history of the Hungarian nation in the Carpathian Basin, mayor Zsolt Forján (Fidesz) of nearby Csenger told MTI.

The Lajta monitor, the sole remaining, fully restored river warship of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, is now a floating museum on the Danube in front of Parliament. The river monitor was launched in 1871, and besides serving throughout the First World War, it played a part in the toppling of the short-lived Communist regime of Béla Kun in 1919.
