Last year about 5 million Hungarian adults or 65% were overweight or obese according to a national nutrition and health survey. Fully 67% of men and 62% of women fell into the category of overweight or obese, and the problem rose with age, the survey prepared by the National Institute for Food and Nutrition Science (OETI) said.

Government Backs Down From Abolishing University Degrees After Student Protest

The State Secretary for higher education has announced that contrary to earlier plans, degrees in international relations and communications will not be abolished, but rather restructured according to the recommendations of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference.

The leftist opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) called on the government to withdraw its decision to eliminate several university courses in the social sciences from next year. Csaba Molnár, the party’s deputy leader, said that the government’s decision to remove these courses at Bachelor’s level from next year’s offerings was politically motivated and had no other reasonable explanation.
