The Hungarian capital Budapest has been named the world’s second-best city in the world in a top American travel magazine. Readers of Condé Nast Traveler, a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine published in New York City since 1987, have secured the city a Readers’ Choice Award for the world’s second-best city, with an overall rating of 86.090.

Budaörs is not a very charismatic place. We usually drive through it with blinkers on our way to Ikea. And yet it has a very ancient history, going back to the Bronze Age 3.500 years ago. Until I came to this sensational exhibition at the Ludwig Museum I didn’t know I liked Pop Art. Basically I only knew Warhol’s Campbell Soup and Lichtenstein’s comic strips which are here as well, but I was unprepared for the arresting impact of this huge collection of art works whose artistic quality, it seems to me, outweighs what they call in marketing meetings here the “Vow Effect”.

I think the one thing most expats miss in Hungary is the sea, and perhaps not only the expats. Driving into the country the other day I saw on the one billboard blank of ads and propaganda someone had written: Now that we have a Mediterranean climate couldn’t we have a sea as well?
