The revamp of the Budapest-Belgrade rail line could begin this year once the necessary agreements between the Hungarian and Chinese governments are signed, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said. The Hungarian-Serbian-Chinese working group dealing with the modernisation of the railway line held its third session at the foreign ministry on Thursday.

Disaster Control offices received 1,600 reports of damage in Budapest and another 3,000 elsewhere in the wake of the storm that swept across Hungary yesterday. A house collapsed in Budapest, leaving injured people trapped under the rubble. Several trolleybuses and trams did not run as their overhead cables were damaged in the storm.

Central Budapest’s Nyugati pályaudvar railway station has reopened after a two-week maintenance period in the early hours of Monday, meaning that passenger trains are again serving the station according to regular schedules. Most of the station has been opened to passengers, although there are still obstacles to pedestrian traffic on the building’s side towards the WestEnd shopping mall.
