Hungary’s Former President Árpád Göncz Dies Aged 93

Árpád Göncz, Hungary’s first postcommunist president who held office between 1990 and 2000, has died at the age of 93. Parliament observed a minute of silence, while the government paid tribute to Göncz in a statement of condolences, saying that as the first head of state of a free democratic Hungary, Göncz had “served his ten years in office to the best of his ability”.

The Sixty-Four Counties Youth Movement (HVIM) held a torch-lit march commemorating the 95th anniversary of the Trianon peace treaty near Heroes’ Square in Budapest. Participants carried Hungarian and red-and-white-striped flags, the latter associated with the Hungarian far right over the past decade, and a large flag of Szeklerland, chanting the slogan “Down with Trianon!”

Expectations about Hungary’s democratic transition and accession to the European Union had been unrealistic, Speaker of Parliament László Kövér said. Assessing the period since Hungary’s regime change 25 years ago in an interview to public news channel M1, Kövér said the question must be asked if the development gap has closed between Hungary and older EU member states.

Hungary, as the current president of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), hosted a large-scale international event remembering the Holocaust, in London. Szabolcs Takács, Hungary’s state secretary for EU affairs, said London was a symbolic venue for such an event as Britain had a very strong Jewish community from whom there was a lot to learn.

The State Secretary for higher education has announced that contrary to earlier plans, degrees in international relations and communications will not be abolished, but rather restructured according to the recommendations of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference.
