The drivers blocked traffic in two lanes out of six on Elisabeth Bridge with a demand that Uber be banned and regulations enforced. Ride-hailing company Uber has voiced concern over a bill that seeks to ban its services in Hungary. Zoltán Fekete, a senior executive at the company, said in front of the economy ministry that the ban which would include blocking Uber’s website goes against modern trends and innovation. Uber operates in 415 cities worldwide but its website is not blocked anywhere, Fekete said.

Inspections of ride-hailing service Uber by the national tax office NAV since January 1 have uncovered 20 drivers with no tax numbers, the office said. NAV has so far conducted 250 inspections in the form of “test rides” and levied fines of 3.6 million forints (EUR 11,500) during the period, it said. The cabinet submitted a bill to Parliament yesterday that in effect outlaws Uber and drivers who work for the company. The bill would make it possible to deprive drivers of their licence for six months if they are caught transporting passengers illegally for a second time and their vehicles could be withdrawn from traffic for up to three years.
