The “web of patronage” revealed when spending by central bank foundations was made public in April has shocked Hungarians, according to an extensive report published by Bloomberg at noon today. “Even seasoned trackers of corruption in the former Soviet Bloc say they’re startled by the audacity the documents reveal,” the report says.

Speaking at a press conference in front of the presidential Sándor Palace on Friday, Tóbiás said central bank governor György Matolcsy and the central bank’s foundations “endanger Hungary’s financial stability and weaken the forint”.

Criticism of the central bank and its foundations is “political bluff”, the bank’s governor György Matolcsy said in an interview published in Friday’s daily Magyar Nemzet. Matolcsy said he highly valued the trust placed in him by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and he was sure that they would continue to work together.

The ruling Fidesz party is calling on the government to release the names of those who were involved in the signing of the Budapest metro contracts with French engineering company Alstom. Alstom has recently been revealed to have transferred more than 597,000 euros to a company owned by the family of former Socialist prime minister Péter Medgyessy.

Two-thirds of Hungary’s homeless people reside in the countryside and their conditions are continuously deteriorating, the head of the Shelter Foundation said citing a recent survey carried out among Hungary’s rough sleepers. Péter Győri said that out of the 10,206 homeless people the foundation surveyed in February, 3,968 lived in Budapest and 6,238 in the countryside.
