Undertow, Trafó Budapest, 21 May
Magnus Westwell, the young Scottish talent of Sadler’s Wells, a key venue for contemporary dance in London, is arriving to create the SUB.LAB.PRO ensemble’s last choreography for this season.

Spanning the euphoric and the desolate, the performance invites the public into dream-like, ethereal worlds, where decaying and generative processes aim to challenge the limits of emotional and physical experience.

In Undertow, eight performers are drawn into a slow, continuous pull, shifting through states of density, suspension and release. Through sustained tension, repetition and risk, the work moves towards moments of threshold - where accumulation begins to tip towards collapse. A fragile negotiation between resistance and surrender unfolds as the piece gathers its own weight.

Gestures and sounds are extended, repeated, and eroded over time. With choreography and composition developed side-by-side in the studio - Undertow emerges from their interdependence, prioritising an embodied, affective experience.

Magnus Westwell is a Scottish choreographer and performer working at the intersection of contemporary dance and physical theatre.

His work often explores the relationships between the body, identity, and memory through a strongly visual and conceptual approach. His creations have been presented on various European stages and at international festivals. Experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration play a key role in his artistic practice.
