Hungarian Opposition Wants A Say In Election Of President
"Representatives of the Socialist, Politics Can Be Different (LMP) and Democratic Coalition parties met yesterday to consider how they might influence the election of Hungary’s next president. The meeting, initiated by the Socialists, was held after cross-party talks on campaign funding. Jobbik refused to take part.

Socialist caucus director Jozsef Tobias said his party is initiating the amendment of the Basic Law to have the head of state elected by a four-fifths majority of Parliament rather than two-thirds.

He said the Socialists would consider a person who is generally respected, stands above parties, and seeks consensus and compromise.

LMP and the Democratic Coalition said they will adopt a position by next Tuesday, when another meeting will be convened, at which Fidesz will also be present.

The Democratic Coalition continues to support the nomination of Gabor Ivanyi, head of the Hungarian Evangelical Brethren Community.

LMP’s Gergely Karacsony expressed doubt about whether any progress can be made.

Fidesz MP Gergely Gulyas said Fidesz did not take part at the meeting as it was an opposition gathering."
