Xpat Opinion: Arab Spring Spreads To Hungary?

As women in several Arab countries are fighting for basic civil rights, such as the right to drive in Saudi Arabia, Magyar women have recently won their very own battle to drive… trains. Hungarian Railways/MAV is to launch a new version of its strictly male train driving course in January, this time accepting female applicants only, Blikk reported. To date women have been banned from such pursuits.
Male drivers have become infuriated, and the union has even approached the Hungarian PM in an attempt to “derail” the initiative.
President Laszlo Kiss said the profession involves lifting heavy weights, getting up early in morning and arriving home late. Women, and especially mothers, should avoid such conditions.
So far 895 have enrolled, but only 15 will be shortlisted for the first, January installment of the course.
