Hungary's Opposition United Against Flat Tax
The Socialist Party, the Democratic Coalition, the Social Democrat Party and Alliance for Hungary agreed in Tuesday talks to abolish the flat tax but failed to reach consensus on the pace of abolishing the special taxes on certain business sectors.

Following the meting at the headquarters of economics institute GKI, Democratic Coalition party director László Varju said the parties are united on the need for a radical change in tax policy, and that the special taxes cause economic stagnation, a lack of confidence in Hungary and a decline in investments.

Former economy minister Csaba Kákosy, who headed the Socialist delegation, said a three-tier income tax regime is part of their economic policy.

The opposition economic policy consultations will continue in two weeks.

LMP has stayed away from the talks from the start and is participating only in consultations on constitutional matters.
