Too Much Chewing Gum To Cause Extreme Weight Loss
Nowadays, an increasing number of food products contain sweeteners instead of sugar due to the highly popular “dieting life-style”. Out of all sweeteners, sorbitol is one of the most common one, which is hardly absorbed by the small intestine and known by its diarrheal side effects. The British Medical Journal recently published a report of two extreme cases, which are undeniably confirming this fact.

Both patients had complaints of chronic diarrhea, strong abdominal pain, and severe weight loss. Very careful medical checkups proved, that the background of these problems lie within the eating habits. The two patients were both consuming an absurd amount of sugar free chewing gum and sweeteners.

The first patient, a 21-year-old woman ate approximately 2-3 packs of gum on a daily basis, which means 18-20gramms of sorbitol. The second patient, a 46-year-old man confessed of taking 20 gums and 200gramms of sweetener each day.

The immediate withdrawal of sorbitol restored the balanced intestinal function, and made the abdominal pain go away.

The side effects of these ingredients are usually written on the wrapper with small letters, which can be a reason why people are not fully aware.

“Although, the side effects of excessive sorbitol consumption were proven by these two cases, some further, large-scale tests will be done in the future.”- warned the research team leader Dr. Juerger Bauditz.
