Xpat Opinion: Music Beneath Budapest Streets
It is nothing out of the ordinary to walk down any stairwell in the city, either on your way to the metro or to the other side of the street, and have a musical tune fill your ears. Now this tune can be beautiful or can just as easily cause you to quicken your pace to the nearest exit of relief. Within seconds one knows whether they have entered into the audience of a skilled musician or a not so talented hopeful. Either way the performer will grab one’s attention for better or for worse. What you do with this new found excitement is up to you.

When coming across a talented performer, whether they are singing or playing their heart out, one can do many things; slow their walk to indulge themselves in this unexpected treat, reach into their pockets and throw a little change the performer’s way, or those who dare can even join in and sing along. The same options are open even when coming across a not so talented performer. No matter the choice it is impossible not to notice the free show one has the privilege of experiencing on their daily commute. When asking a group of students who had recently made their venture to the city they excitedly stated that they looked forward to hearing these musicians. They described the encounters as each day having a new surprise fill their ears as you draw nearer to the metro stairwells.

Now as previously mentioned these musicians come in all levels of talent. Some are so skilled one cannot help but to stop for a moment and listen in disbelief. Why is someone so talented playing in the middle of a metro station? After asking a few performers there were two simple answers. The most common answer being their desire to earn a little extra cash.

Who could blame them? The second answer however was more profound. Some musicians said they were there out of their love to perform and their love of music. They didn’t mind the money, of course, but ultimately their soul was fed through the experience of performing in front of crowds. Commonly all the performers desired acknowledgment. After all they are doing you a favor. Your commute would be monotonous if it weren’t for their courage and determination to perform for an uncertain audience.

Whether you’re enjoying the many sounds or just passing through take a moment to indulge yourself. Why not? It’s free, unless you feel so moved to spare a little change, and by participating in the music or at least acknowledging the musician you are brightening the day for both you and them. Give to them just as they have given to you. Take a moment of your day to stop and listen, you never know the difference it could make in your life, and even in theirs.
