Hungary Benefits From EU Membership, Says EC Rep Head
Hungary has benefited from its ten years of European Union membership even if the original growth expectations have not been realised, head of the European Commission Representation in Hungary, Tamas Szűcs, said on Tuesday.

He told MTI on the occasion of Hungary’s ten-year anniversary as an EU member that Hungary’s GDP in relation to the EU average grew by only 4 percentage points between 2004 and 2012.

It stood at 63% of the EU average in 2004 and 67% in 2012, he added. Hungary has been one of the greatest benefactors of EU funding, being among the first three member states in this respect.

The EU has supported some 90-95% of public development projects, resulting in around 80,000 such projects completed with the help of EU funding, he added.

Szűcs said no Eurosceptic party has entered the Hungarian government ever and since only 11.5% of the seats are currently occupied by “a party that supports quitting the EU,” fears of such a move are unrealistic.
