Education Key In Policy Towards Hungary’s Ethnic Kin
- 30 Jul 2014 9:00 AM
Education is the key sector of Hungary’s assistance to Hungarian communities abroad, Zsolt Németh, head of Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, said on Tuesday. Addressing a meeting of teachers of Hungarian literature in the Carpathian Basin, Németh said that the survival of Hungarian communities abroad greatly depends on teachers’ ability to convince parents of the need for mother-tongue education and to motivate pupils.
Németh emphasised the need to foster ties with neighbouring countries and represent the interests of Hungarian-language schools beyond the border.
Although the economic crisis has dealt a blow on education in the region, the measures triggered by the crisis should not be allowed to impose a “disproportionate burden on ethnic minority institutions”, he said.
