6. Local cases
Hungarian uses no prepositions. Instead, words like ’on’, ’at’, ’to’, ’from’ and ’near’ are expressed with cases attached to the end of words. Study the most common cases that stand for some of the most common English prepositions referring to location.
We consider these cases in groups of three: The first set of three answers the question ’Hol?’ (Where?), the second set answers the question ’Hova?’ (where to?), and the third set answers the question ’Honnan?’ (Where from?).
Hol?
-ban/-ben Párizsban (in Paris) / a csészében (in the cup)
-on/-en/-ön az asztalon (on the table) / az egyetemen (at the university)
-nál/-nél az ajtónál (near the door) / a liftnél (near the elevator)
Hova?
-ba/-be Párizsba (to Paris) / a csészébe (into the cup)
-ra/-re az asztalra (onto the table) / az egyetemre (to the university)
-hoz/-hez/-höz az ajtóhoz (towards the door) / a lifthez (towards the elevator)
Honnan?
-ból/-ből Párizsból (from Paris) / a csészéből (out of the cup)
-ról/-ről az asztalról (off the table) / az egyetemről (from the university)
-tól/-től az ajtótól (away from the door) / a lifttől (away from the elevator)
