Chief Prosecutor Suspends Procedure Against US Chargé
The Central Investigating Chief Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation in connection with defamation charges brought against tax authority (NAV) head Ildikó Vida, but will suspend it until the suspension of chargé d’affaires André Goodfriend’s diplomatic immunity by the US, Vida’s lawyer told public TV’s news programme on Friday evening.

Futó said earlier that Vida had filed a complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office on the ground of “public defamation causing serious damage”.

The legal claim is that Goodfriend had defamed Vida in her official capacity as NAV chairperson, Futó said. Vida also filed a case with the Municipal Court of Budapest for slander.

The complaints were in connection with statements Goodfriend made in an interview to weekly Heti Válasz published on Dec. 4.

In the interview, Goodfriend said the US embassy in Budapest had information about fraudulent activities within NAV, which, to his knowledge, have not been investigated.
