Richard III performed in traditional Chinese costume will head the eleventh Shakespeare Festival in Gyula, in south-eastern Hungary. The National Theatre of China’s performance with traditional Chinese music is imbued with the concept of yin-yang, representing the dual personality of the main character, József Gedeon, director of the Gyula Castle Theatre, said.
Director Wang Xiaoying noted that the theatre has performed the play in New York City, Denmark, Romania and Macedonia.
The National Theatre of China, founded in 1949, employs 230 actors and has 600 performances a year, Wang said.
The festival marks the start of the new season for the Gyula Castle Theatre with a showcase of Twelfth Night, directed by László Bocsárdi.
The festival, which runs through July 12, will also include performances of Othello, Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice as well as a conference entitled Who was William Shakespeare?.
