Budapest Court Reprimands Former Budapest Police Chief
The Budapest Capital Regional Court reprimanded two suspects and acquitted the other 12 in a hearing held in a criminal procedure against former police chiefs in connection with anti-government riots in 2006. In a non-binding ruling, the court handed down the reprimand, the lowest degree sentence, to former Budapest police chief Péter Gergényi, the second suspect, and Gábor Mittó, the former commander of a local riot police unit.

Former national police chief László Bene, the first suspect, and the other 11 suspects were acquitted of charges.

The court procedure began two years ago against the suspects in connection with the riots by the national television headquarters at Szabadság Square on September 18, 2006 and on the streets of Budapest on September 19-21 and October 23, 2006.

So far more than 100 hearings have been conducted.
