Hungarian Court Rejects Miskolc Evictions
Miskolc cannot mistreat residents of its “numbered streets” neighbourhood, and must make arrangements for their accommodation, the Capital Public Administrative and Labour Court declared in a ruling on Monday.
“We have won,” Erika Muhi of ethnic minority rights group NEKI told Népszabadság.

Based on a complaint filed by NEKI, the Equal Treatment Authority fined the city of Miskolc Ft 500,000 last summer after finding the town guilty of discriminating against the residents of the numbered streets.

In its so-called “ghetto elimination programme,” the city council evicted families to the street or to inadequate housing.

The area was to be cleared because the local football stadium is to be expanded.

The Authority told the council to present a plan to accommodate homeless people in an appropriate manner by September 30, 2015.

However, the city council sought a judicial review at the Capital Public Administrative and Labour Court, arguing that it had been given far too little time to draw up a plan.
