The government will spend 65 billion forints (EUR 201m) more on cultural projects in 2017 than last year, the prime minister said on Wednesday. Addressing a gala dinner in honour of recipients of the Kossuth Prize on Hungary’s March 15 national holiday, Viktor Orbán said that the country’s new economic model was working well and could ensure the necessary funds.
He suggested that financial constraints could be removed from the way of creative activities.
In his address, Orbán envisaged “great but chaotic times in Europe”, which he said would “rearrange the ranking of nations” and added that culture will gain increasing importance.
“Our national culture will be a trump card in our hands,” he said, adding that the country will rely on the work of the awardees.
