Female Representation In Hungarian Parliament As Low As In Iran & Congo
London-based public sector improvement company Apolitical published a map that depicts the ratio of female Members of Parliament in national assemblies around the world. Hungary’s bright red stands out in Europe: this color indicates the lowest percentages on the map.

No other European country measures as low as Hungary when it comes to the percentage of female MPs, a figure used to illustrate prominence of women in politics and the hardships women face in the respective countries where they choose to follow political careers.

According to Apolitical, half of the world’s population are women but today women hold only 23% of all seats in parliaments and senates globally. Hungary’s numbers are similar to those of Iran and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, two countries that are not known for leading the world in empowering women.

Rwanda and Bolivia lead the list with the highest representation of women in their assemblies, while the Nordic countries such as Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland lead the numbers in Europe.

According to the website of the Hungarian Parliament, 20 out of 199 MPs are women, about 10 percent. Only six of Fidesz’s 114 seats in the National Assembly are filled by women, or 5.2 percent.
