Reconstruction Of Budapest’s Déli (Southern) Railway Terminal Delayed
The much-awaited rebirth of the Déli (Southern) Railway Terminal of Budapest has suffered a massive delay as the tender for the reconstruction works has been called off due to financial reasons, news portal mno.hu reported.

The public procurement was cancelled because the budget of the Hungarian State Railway Company (MÁV) turned to be insufficient to cover the enormous costs of the project. The reconstruction of the “Déli” has been long on the Hungarian government’s agenda with several plans drafted and scrapped over the years.

According to the latest plans, a modern sports and recreation centre with several facilities would have been built next to railway terminal located in Budapest 12th district. The facility was planned to occupy the railway station’s technical area adjoining the area of the Hungarian Sports University.

The ambitious plans included the construction of a public centre comprising an ice hockey rink, tennis, squash and streetball courts, a golf training field, a ski training track, a climbing wall for children as well as an extreme sports track.

The works would have started in 2018 with the aim of finishing the project in four years.
