Local Opinion: Ukraine Under Martial Law
Pondering the implications of the Russian-Ukrainian naval incident, a pro-government columnist finds Hungary’s position diplomatically and geopolitically extremely delicate.

Magyar Hírlap’s Tamás Ulicza interprets the conflict over Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, in the framework of the frozen conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Ulicza thinks that both Ukraine and Russia are interested in testing the international community. Ukraine provoked Russia, and Russia overreacted, Ulicza believes.

He suggests that both Europe and Hungary are facing a very difficult geopolitical problem. Ulicza recommends that Hungary should not side with any of the powers involved in the conflict, but at the same time should do its best to protect ethnic Hungarians in the Transcarpathian region of western Ukraine.
