Europe’s First Animal Protection Food Bank Launches in Hungary
In a pioneering development for animal welfare, the Hungarian Animal Protection Food Bank (Magyar Állatvédelmi Élelmiszerbank) has officially launched its operations.

Representing a unique initiative within Europe, the foundation rescues surplus animal feed and redistributes it to shelters, animal control facilities, social institutions, and municipal governments facing resource shortages.

Speaking at a press conference in Székesfehérvár, founder Bence Lajos explained that the primary objective is to alleviate animal hunger across both institutional shelters and private households.

Drawing on more than a decade of experience in the animal welfare sector, Lajos noted that the greatest hurdle for dedicated rescuers is rarely a lack of commitment, but rather a critical shortage of basic resources.

This systemic challenge led to the establishment of the Hungarian Animal Protection Food Bank Foundation.

While the initiative was conceived and launched in Székesfehérvár, it operates on a nationwide scale, with long-term plans to expand the model across Europe.

The foundation currently holds approximately 120 metric tons of animal feed, stored at no cost courtesy of the logistics firm G.E.B.E. Kft. in Székesfehérvár.

Looking ahead, the organization intends to broaden its scope of assistance to include dietary supplements, medical devices, and veterinary medications.

Foundation curator Adrienn Hornyik emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, stating that meaningful animal welfare work depends entirely on shared effort rather than individual action.

She observed that while Hungary possesses a wealth of goodwill, professional expertise, and a strong desire to act, the sector frequently suffers from a lack of infrastructure to ensure long-term predictability and security.

The foundation aims to bridge this gap by establishing sustainable operations that simultaneously reduce environmental waste, saving safe, usable animal feed from destruction.

Underscoring the necessity of the project, Székesfehérvár Mayor András Cser-Palkovics remarked that while traditional food banks for human relief have long been staple pillars of social aid, a parallel system for animals had been entirely missing until now.

He welcomed the news that a generous corporate donation of an additional 200 metric tons of feed is scheduled to arrive at the facility within days, allowing the organization to launch its distribution efforts with significant momentum.

Gábor Dömsödi, Executive Director of G.E.B.E. Kft., confirmed his company’s long-standing support for animal welfare causes, making the decision to partner with the food bank an obvious choice.

He noted that the arrangement offers practical benefits to all parties involved, as manufacturers save on product destruction costs while shelters receive essential nourishment for the animals in their care.

The logistics company has committed to permanently reserving 200 pallets of space within its 20,000-square-meter warehouse facility specifically for the food bank's inventory.
