Budapest Theatres Closing Due To New Covid Rules
Budapest theatre the Belvárosi Színház has decided to close indefinitely, citing new regulations restricting audience size.

New rules announced by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Tuesday stipulate that only one in three seats may be occupied in theatres and cinemas.

In a statement, the theatre said “In the present dramatic virus situation we do not believe in semi- or partial solutions, we do not believe that the threat of the epidemic can be reduced by taking bogus measures.

That is why we decided not to hold our performances at the Belvárosi Színház as of November 9, 2020 until the epidemic safely eases”.

Performances will go ahead this weekend in observance of epidemiological regulations, and arrangements will be made later for making up for future cancellations.

Theatres are announcing one after the other that they will close down or go online until the coronavirus situation improves, even though restrictions on opening hours would not apply to them, website 444 writes.

The Belvárosi Színház has been joined by the Örkény Színház, and other cultural institutions are also expected to make similar announcements.
