Xploring Hungary Video: Rám Ravine - Thrilling Wild Hike Through a Volcanic Gorge
- 10 Nov 2020 9:54 AM

Know as Rám-szakadék in Hungarian, this is said to be the most adventurous trail in the whole of Hungary. Located in the Visegrádi hills, it's a great excursion destination all year round, including autumn and winter time when the water is likely to be running stronger.
The full 7-km trail connecting Dömös and Dobogókő includes around 1 km through the ravine itself, where the hike becomes more of an obstacle course.
Expect to cross the rocky creek bed multiple times, scale narrow passages using metal rails and ladders, and navigate steep volcanic walls that rise up to 30 metres high.
The relatively cool, humid microclimate supports a lush array of plant life rarely seen elsewhere in Hungary.
Things get even more atmospheric after rainfall or snowfall, when the trail becomes slick and challenging - a natural adventure park where your sense of balance and sure-footedness are truly put to the test.
Top Tips: Wear waterproof hiking shoes with good grip, and bring gloves for extra comfort on the metal rails. The hike is one-way through the gorge (uphill from Dömös), so plan your route accordingly. Best enjoyed from spring to autumn.
