While Hungary has fulfilled requirements on judicial reform, the EU will continue to withhold some 20 billion euros of cohesion funds until other concerns are addressed, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president said.
Hungary’s economy is projected to avoid a recession in 2023, and return to steep growth next year, despite the protracted war in Ukraine and the European Union’s sanctions on Russia, the finance ministry said.
The European Commission has proposed suspending a part of the EU funds allocated to Hungary over concerns about their mismanagement. Johannes Hahn, the Commissioner for Budget and Administration, told a press conference on Sunday that the EC was proposing to the European Council a suspension of 65% of cohesion funds due to Hungary, amounting to an estimated 7.5 billion euros.
The government’s failure to submit a plan that would be approved by the EU and pave the way for the release of EU reconstruction fund money for the country has cost Hungary €1.4 billion, Népszava writes.
