Budapest City Hall Car Park to be Turned Into Green Space
The gravel car park at the rear of Budapest city hall is to be converted into a green space open to the public, mayor Gergely Karácsony told a press conference on Monday afternoon.

The city yesterday invited bids for the design of the 15,800m2 plot of land, with the requirement that at least 50% of the area will be covered by a green surface and trees to mitigate the effects of summer heatwaves.

The winner will be selected next spring and work will begin in 2023.

Karácsony said the plan is further evidence that news reports of a planned sale of the city hall building are false.

Deputy mayor Gábor Kerpel-Fronius said the jury panel for the tender will include representatives of City Hall, architectural organisations, the Fifth District, the state and a civil applicant to be selected in a public tender.

Karácsony noted that the renovation of the nearby building that housed the Merlin Theatre that has been vacant for more than ten years will soon be completed.
